My sign was late in coming today, at least the one that made me tingle. I made a difficult phone call to someone that I’ve been playing phone tag with for a couple of days. It was an important phone call for me financially, and usually an emotionally charged phone call as well.
The secretary, new, said my party was unavailable and asked my name. In that instant I had the choice to be irritated or not. In that instant I chose not, and answered her kindly, repeating my phone number. “And it’s personal,” she said. “Yes,” I said. “See,” she said, “I have a great memory.” “You certainly do,” I said, meaning it. “Especially when it’s nice people calling,” she said.”
After I asked her name and thanked her, it came to me…the theme of today, all the little incidences that cascaded and made up today. Speak less and listen more, it’s a gift to the other and learning for me. Take my time and be kind. There’s no rush to kindness or detriment to efficiency. Small gestures can make a big difference. Thoughtfulness goes a long way. And feels really good.
